Special Events and Rentals

The Old Capitol Museum and Museum of Natural History may be reserved for events by University of Iowa groups, non-profits, and other interested individuals.  Possible events include lectures, performances, receptions, wedding ceremonies, birthday parties, and more! Your event supports the Pentacrest Museums--all revenue supports our activities and our student employees. To learn more about special events, see our FAQ page.

Please keep in mind that we are a museum first and foremost. We have specific rules about food, drinks, flowers, and decorations that may be different from other event venues, but that are necessary to protect our exhibits, our collection, and our historic building.  We appreciate your cooperation.

Birthday Parties

Though we have reopened to the public and are beginning to explore the return of our traditional programs, we have not re-introduced extended offerings at the Museums at this time, such as Birthday Parties. We will update this page and publicize the return of this offering when it's time.


Wedding ceremonies and receptions can be held in either museum.  


Food and beverages must be arranged through the University of Iowa's Iowa Memorial Union Catering Department. We require that at least one IMU food service person is in attendance during the reception. 

Fees and Billing

Building rental fees vary according to level of service and time of day. For an estimate, please contact Shereena Honary at 319-335-2010, shereena-honary@uiowa.edu. A deposit may be required for large events. Pentacrest Museums staff will bill the sponsoring department following the event.  Iowa Memorial Union Catering will send an itemized invoice for catering charges.
