Whether you have 2 or 200 hours to spare, there's a place for you in our volunteer program. Our volunteers make up the face of our museum, engage with guests, work with artifacts, and put their talents to work for something they believe in...us!
We have a continuous need for reliable volunteers to work with visitors in "front-of-house" positions at both the Old Capitol Museum and the UI Museum of Natural History. Our docents greet visitors, answer questions, help in the gift shops, and may even give tours to groups of all ages.
Typically, volunteer docents commit to regular shifts over a medium - to long-term period. We're looking for a 4 to 5 hours/week commitment, one shift per week.
Incorporating our seniors into this position which is otherwise occupied by University of Iowa students, creates an amazing opportunity for mentorship. Use your lifetime of skills and knowledge to support students at the beginning of their employment journeys, interact with the public, and have some fun!
Volunteers help staff our frequent events and educational programs. These may be continuing or one-time commitments, but are always engaging and fun.
We sometimes need volunteers for short-term work that varies. It could be anything from hanging posters in local businesses or preparing materials in advance for education programs. Lots of possibilities, in small packages, to fit your schedule.
If you want to volunteer and have professional skills you think would be useful to the museums but want to design your own participation, please get in touch! We're open to collaborating to find an opportunity that matches your interests.
